When I first learned about Mindanao, it was from the Peace Corps Safety and Security officer telling us that if we ever went there while we were volunteers we would be kicked out of the Peace Corps because it is too dangerous for foreigners to go there. There are definitely parts of Mindanao that are quite dangerous and have even seen kidnappings of tourists, many places are perfectly safe to visit. By far my favorite spot in Mindanao is Siargao and the Cloud 9 wave near General Luna. With a panoramic view of the open Pacific Ocean and one of the best right-handers in the world, Cloud 9 is really an amazing place. Mindanao itself is the second largest island in the Philippines and is the home of Mt. Apo, the tallest mountain in the Philippines. Other popular spots to visit in Mindanao are Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Bukidnon.
