Jun Reputana’s Neighborhood
Jam - April 2004
Daniel put
on an impromptu afternoon show for the neighborhood kids near
Jun's house. He's a pretty good juggler actually.
|
|
I think the
little boy in the blue shirt is trying to add another item for
Daniel to start juggling.
|
|
Daniel's juggling
was a tough act to follow with this crowd especially, but I
borrowed one of Jun's guitars and tried to find a song they
had heard before. Photo by Daniel

Jun
came out of his workshop to see if he could offer any tips for
the setlist. Photo by Daniel

Daniel really
has a great knack for getting kids to be silly in front of the
camera. Photo by Daniel

After
the sun set, we moved the jam session to Jun's porch. I'm not
sure why it looks like I'm angry at this little kid, I think
he was just asking me if I could play his favorite song. Photo

The
neighborhood kids seemed to like what we were playing. Photo

Jun's
son came out and fired up his keyboard. It was really starting
to feel like we had a band going on the porch there. Photo

They hung around
to hear what we were going to play next, so maybe it didn't
sound too bad hopefully. Photo by Daniel

We
rocked out on Jun's porch for about an hour, I'm hoping to get
back there to play again soon. Photo by Daniel

Mangoes might be my new favorite
food. Back in Virginia, I used to eat an apple a day
for lunch, now I eat at least one mango a day. So when
I heard about the Mango Festival held on the island
of Guimaras about five hours by bus north of my site
in Dumaguete, I knew I had to go. Guimaras is renowned
throughout the Philippines for having the sweetest mangoes,
and since they're managed to eradicate an invasive fruit
fly it is also one of the few locations in the Philippines
that exports mangoes to the U.S.. Sheila, one of our
Peace Corps language instructors is from Guimaras and
graciously hosted us for all the best events during
the festival, including my favorite; the "Eat Til
You Drop Mango Eating Bonanza". (Click
