Northern Thailand & September 2006 Coup
Bangkok is the perfect hub to reach South Asia from the Philippines and so I connected to my flight to Kathmandu and then my return from Delhi via Thailand. Never needing an excuse to stop off for a few more meals of great Thai eats, I extended my layover for two weeks to work on an assignment for Philippine Airlines' Mabuhay magazine and also get in a long overdue trip to Chiang Mai in the north. As it turned out the day after I arrived, some Thai Generals overthrew the government while Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was in New York for a meeting of the UN. The coup was largely peaceful, but seeing the tanks and soldiers stationed around Bangkok was a bit unsettling. So I headed north from Chiang Mai to an overly touristed town named Pai where I met a great new friend named Wu Lan who joined me for a very fun elephant jungle trek that ended with us swimming with the elephants in a muddy river. A little dangerous--but definitely very fun. (Click here to see the photo essay--49 photos)
