Dumaguete with Preston - February & March 2005

From Puerto Princesa in Palawan we caught a Cebu Pacific flight to Cebu.

Preston enjoyed his complimentary bag of "Roller Coaster" potato rings on the flight.

Our captain was a regular in-flight Jerry Lewis, and took time out from steering the plane to come out in the aisle and crack some zingers with the passengers. With a wave and a "that's all folks", he was back in the cockpit.

After we landed in Cebu, we immediately caught a bus south to catch the ferry to Dumaguete.

Once again I have to compliment the tricycle design in Dumaguete that allows a few Western dudes like us to ride comfortably around town.

While Preston was in Dumaguete, the post cards that I designed for Apo Island were in print at Dumaguete Asian Printers in town.

I gave Preston an impromptu tour of the Silliman University Marine Lab where I work for my Peace Corps assignment. This room houses the second largest collection in the world of the Brydes' whale.

Just to give an idea how big these animals are, Preston is sticking his head into the whale's mouth.

Believe it or not, these tools are used to kill the whales. Kind of like killing a bull moose with a knife and fork.

In addition to the whale bones, the Marine Lab is home to endangered Philippine crocodiles. The "Do Not Put Your Hands in the Crocodile Pen" sign is not a joke.

This fellow would certainly relish some fresh meat.

Best to observe them from the other side of the fence.

After the Marine Lab tour and meeting some staff at the lab, we headed back in to town.

We stopped off in the Lee Plaza mall in Dumaguete where Preston tried out some souvenir shirts.

For dinner we went to Mamia's, where they have the best steak in town by my reckoning.

It was a great meal as usual.

The next morning Preston tried out the local internet cafe, Scooby's.

After Scooby's we went over to City Burger, where they make the best chicken on a stick in Dumaguete. I've never ordered a hamburger here, and it's pretty much known only for the chicken. Recently I've noticed that the "CB" initials for City Burger have been changed to stand for "Chicken Barbeque".

Preston turned out to officially be the first person to write a message on the new Apo Island post cards.

We were pretty hungry so we ended up ordering two plates of chicken each. Oink oink!

A completed Apo post card in hand and City Burger chicken juice on the face, this was a good day.

Then it was time to catch a tricycle to the airport to send Preston back to Manila for his return flight to San Francisco.

They won't let "well wishers" inside the airport, so we had to say our farewells outside the gate.

Preston traveled very light for the trip over, though he obligingly carried some stuff back home for me. Thanks again brah!

Siquijor Island - March 2005
Preston and I took a short overnight trip to nearby Siquijor Island. We got in a visit to the cliffs of the Salagdoong Beach, played several games of "horse race" courtesy of Kyle and Melissa from my Peace Corps group. Preston even found the swimming pool he was looking for at the Coco Grove where we stayed for the night. (Click here to see the photo essay--28 photos)
