Surf photography isn’t quite as fun as surfing, but if you’re already a surfer and know a bit about digital photography, you should be able to make quick progress in surf photography. I got my start with surf photography in Bali, Indonesia, which is a pretty ideal place to learn. With the best waves on the West coast, the setting sun backlights the Indian Ocean, giving these sunset wave photos a really cool quality to them. Also, with some of the most consistent waves in the world, it is pretty easy to pick a good spot to shoot some surf photos in Bali. I prefer to swim out into the surf and shoot from the water. The surf photos you’ll get from being ‘in there’ with the surfers are generally going to be better than the ones shot from the beach with a long zoom lens.
