El Nido is probably my favorite town in Palawan, located in the Western Philippines. Set in a small bay against a background of towering karst limestone cliffs, the El Nido community looks out on Cadlao Island, one of the more dramatic island sunset views you will find in the Philippines. With the nearby Bacuit archipelago, made up of spectacular karst limestone cliffs, El Nido is where my friends Kris and Kristen lived for their Peace Corps service. Many of the photos from this gallery were taken during visits to see Kris and Kristen, and also include some shots from an ill-fated overnight beach camping trip that we took by sea kayak trip that involved a rescue by a passing fishing boat. Still, that trip will go down as one of the most memorable from the entire time I was in the Philippines and definitely qualifies as a Palawan adventure. There’s also some shots from an underwater photography class that I taught at nearby Miniloc Island in October 2009.
