Every school kid knows that China has the largest population on earth with more than 1.3 billion people and that it is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations. With an intimidatingly difficult language, strict government, and huge geographical area, it can be a challenging place to travel. I made my first trip there in December 2009 with my brother Preston after he finished a study abroad program in Shanghai as a part of his MBA program at UCLA. We visited Northwest Yunnan province (thanks again to Ann and Ed for the Tiger Leaping Gorge and Lijiang travel advice!). Highlights included walking around Old Town Lijiang, Mountain biking around Shangri La (Zhongdian), and trekking the Tiger Leaping Gorge. After we finished our NW Yunnan travel, I made my way back to catch a flight to Bangkok via the train from Kunming to Shenzhen.
