Bali Surf Road Trip to Lombok: Escaping the Kuta Beach Crowds
In November 2007, after spending two weeks searching Bali's Bukit peninsula for waves, Preston and I decided to give Lombok a try. My friend Eddy Bagus from Java had been there several times before and told me about the great waves near "the other" Kuta Beach. So we loaded up our motorbikes with surf boards and packed a couple t-shirts and extra clothes and headed up Bali's coastal road towards...
Find Out MoreBali Surf Trip / Bukit, Jimbaran and South of Kuta November 2008
Beach sunsets, unpredictable waves, and low crowds were the norm for the off-season Bali surf trip in November 2008. I met up with Preston and Matt for one night in Kuta, then we headed south to find a beach bungalow away from the crowds. We found it at the Bukit peninsula around Jimbaran and ended up basing ourselves there for most of the month. The swell was pretty small for most of the time,...

When visiting Bali, be careful not to spend too much time on the beach! I should probably post this bit of advice to my own wall, because every time I leave the coast and head for the areas around Ubud I regret not visiting this part of the island more regularly. Aside from some shots around Ubud, this gallery includes some highlights of a trip to my friend Scholastica's village in Jatiluwih....

Preston spent the summer in Bali with me after finishing business school in L.A.. For two months we were able to get out on the waves pretty much every day from July into the middle of September. It was hard to put down the board and pick up the camera, but especially on days when the waves were too big for me to ride I swam out to shoot. This gallery covers the highlights of surfing Bali during...
Find Out MoreBig Waves in Bali: Padang Padang and Surfing the Big Swell
Big waves hit Bali on the weekend of September 12th, 2009. A few said it was the biggest swell to hit the island in seven years. I couldn't vouch for that, but I can tell you that the waves were definitely too big for me to handle on my 6'6" so I left the board at home and took the camera out to shoot some of the best surfers on earth spending some quality time inside the Padang Padang "Green...

Find Out MoreBali Surf Spots: Low tide barrels at Bingin Beach
I'm pretty sure I saw several waves break below sea level at Bingin that day. How is that possible? Probably had something to do with the 0.2 meter low tide and the eight and ten foot barrels sucking all the water off the reef before they slammed into the jagged coral... Anyway, aside from that it was another nice afternoon to shoot Bingin in June, 2010.

Bingin at sunset is amazing for surf photography. Dredging barrels backlit by the sun dropping below the Indian Ocean horizon, it's no surprise that Bingin draws some of the most intense competition of any wave on Bali. This gallery includes highlights from an epic afternoon of shooting Bingin with perfect light and perfect waves.
