2008 was spent mostly in Bali, Indonesia, helping out with the Photovoices project, originally sponsored by National Geographic Magazine. I was still shooting the ten-megapixel Canon Rebel XTi and the ten-megapixel Canon Powershot A640, and this was the first year I shot surf pictures at Kuta Beach. Speaking of Kuta Beach, I also learned to surf here with a lot of help from Eddy Bagus. I decided to sell my Canon digital Rebel XTi and upgrade to the 40D. I also picked up my first Canon ‘L’ series lens, the extremely sharp and extremely versatile 70-200mm zoom lens. Notable trips included diving the WWII shipwreck at Tulamben with Ed, Robert, and Nigel, attending a traditional Balinese cremation near Ubud (thanks for the invitation Putu!), some of the best diving I have ever had at Apo Island, as well as a month of surfing with my brother Preston, Eddy Bagus, and Matt to spots south of Kuta Beach in Bali, and a surf road trip to Kuta in Lombok. I closed out the year with Preston in China’s NW Yunnan province doing a trek to the Tiger Leaping Gorge before flying to Kathmandu to meet my friend Steve for New Year’s via a Christmas stopover in Bangkok and Phuket with JJ and Chloe.
