This is a gallery of the best shots from a liveaboard dive trip to Komodo National Park.

Aaargh maties--thar she blows! Here's our authentic Sulawesi Pinisi boat lying at anchor and all set for the dive safari through Komodo National Park.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Sarah and Laure may not be the surliest scalawags this side of Tortuga, but Laure can get pretty whiny when there's not enough veggies on the menu...

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
And we're off! Can't help but get little bit of the old seafarer's excitement as our little pirate ship hoisted anchor and headed for the blue horizon of the islands in Komodo National Park.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
We passed a few fancy pantsy versions of our boat as we left the harbor at Labuan Bajo.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The afternoon sky was perfectly cloudless and a beautiful cobalt blue. With a strong salt breeze blowing across the bow of the ship and the blue horizon ahead it was a good day to be alive!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The islands of Sunda are much different than Bali. Craggy windswept islands with a few hardy trees are the norm around Komodo National Park.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The landscape of the Sundanese islands reminded me more of something you'd see in Montana or Idaho. It's much drier here than in Bali so aside from the tough grasses and some windswept trees, there's not much on the islands. The weather was perfect the entire time we were in Komodo National Park.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The top deck of the boat was a great place to hang out and take in the island scenery as we traveled around Komodo. Here, Laure takes some time to catch up on the latest Danielle Steele novel. I believe Laure has read them all?

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Sunset at the surface as we came up for our last dive of the first day. Aside from how cool our little boat looked when it was silhoetted against the colors of the afternoon sky, I was thinking about the great dinner the crew was cooking for us down in the ship's galley.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Early seafarer's had to make do with wretched rations of hard tack biscuits or wormy salt pork. I remember reading that one sailor on Captain Cook's original voyage to Tahiti was able to carve a solid jewlery box from his pork dinner! No such fate awaited us in Komodo, we ate like the proverbial 'Kings of the World'.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
As the light faded on day one, we were pretty excited to see what day two had in store for us.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Our cabin in the bow of the boat, once again, even Captain Morgan didn't have it as good as we did in Komodo!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The sunrises and sunsets in Komodo were intense with brilliant shades of red, yellow, and orange. This shot is from sunrise on our first full day in the park (with many more amazing ones to come over the next few days).

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Another Sulawesi Pinisi ship similar to ours lay at anchor in the same small bay that we had chosen for our night's berth. The brilliant colors of the morning sunrise brought out some really amazing colors from the teak wood of the decking and the craggy island in the background.

Some slightly groggy sea dogs prepreparing for the day's adventures in Komodo.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Definitely a great view to have for the morning breakfast.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The galley of the ship was absolutely beautiful, finished in beautiful teak. The whole room was like being inside an amazingly handmade piece of furniture!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Sarah surfaces after an amazing dive. This is DEFINITELY the best way to explore the beautiful reefs of Komodo National Park.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
In between dives we had some free time to dive off the boat and swim around in the beautiful blue waters of Komodo National Park.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
I grew up obsessed with Treasure Island, so a self portrait from the crow's nest was pretty much mandatory. For the record, this is actually the first crow's nest I've ever been allowed to climb!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The view from the crow's nest was pretty awesome. In this shot Laure sums up how we were all feeling to be in Komodo National Park on such a beautiful day.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Drew dives into the blue--hey that rhymes.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
I passed off the camera to dive in myself and Drew got a shot of me when I swam out in the blue water. Please note my farmer's tan from surfing in Bali with a t-shirt. You can probably also spot the weird tan line on my right ankle where the surf board leash is attached!

Drew, snorkeling around the boat in-between dives.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Laure and Ange climbed the rigging for a crow's nest view as well.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Marta and Drew took the sea kayak out for a spin around the shallower section of the nearby reef. You can really see how great the visibility is in Komodo for diving.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Laure and Ange with the best view in the house.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Another view of Drew and Marta from the crow's nest.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
This totally deserted beach had these shady trees to hang out under and get out of the strong Komodo sun.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Late afternoon sailing around the islands of Komodo National Park is pretty awesome.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The warm glow of the afternoon sun looked amazing on the handmade teak deck of our 'pirate ship'.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Gratuitous portrait on the bow of the boat.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The craggy landscapes of Komodo always look amazing in the afternoon light. We stopped on this island for a short hike to get a view of the surroundings--amazing.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Laure spontaneously did the chicken dance. And there was much rejoicing.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Great view for the sunset over the islands of Komodo National Park.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Laure watches for the green flash when the sun hits the horizon---aaaarrgh!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Waiting for the green flash... Jack Sparrow would be proud.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
We hung out on one of the taller ridges to see the panoramic view of the surrounding islands.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Photos in Komodo pretty much take themselves.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Thar she blows! You can see our little boat lying at anchor for us while the crew is getting dinner ready for our return. No doubt that a real pirate wouldn't give us much street cred.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Obligatory group photo when you're in a place this nice.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Great colors in the late evening sky over Komodo. Love the contrast between the green of the island and the purple of the sky.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Ahem, another gratuitous group shot, this time from the other direction!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
We thought about marooning Drew on an island with a block of cheese, but he's a pretty nice guy so instead we took photos of him while he paddled around this amazingly blue sandbar. Really love the island in the background as well--this shot sums up the amazing landscapes / seascapes of Komodo National Park for me.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
At one point the wind completely died and the sea was as calm as a mill pond.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Ange modeling her sarong at the bow of the boat on another blue sky day in Komodo National Park.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Then Ange pulled the front flip off the starboard side---aaargh maties!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Laure obligingly modeled as a Komodo mermaid in this shot. Love how you can see all the way to the bottom in this shot--she's swimming in about ten meters of water!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Drew was getting a little too saucy so Laure made him walk the plank. Remember what I said about how things can get if there's not enough vegetables around?

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
As it turns out, Drew knows how to swim pretty well, so Laure's 'walk the plank' plan was pretty much foiled. Avast ye!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Just to rub it in, Drew climbed back up the plank (something I've never heard of happening during Blackbeard's days) and did this nice dive off the starboard side to show us what a sea dog he is.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Again, walking the plank couldn't sink Drew.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
...so then Laure had to walk the plank. Pirate's rules are pretty tough--while she was swimming we had a council meeting to decide if she would be keel-hauled for her treachery.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Ange claimed the crow's nest view for the sunset. I climbed up the rigging to get this shot from the larboard mast.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Another great sunset from the bow of the pirate ship.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
I decided to get a little crazy and swing out over the bow while hanging on to the forward rigging.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Meanwhile more trees and grassy islands passed us by.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
    Up, up, and away!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Since we'd spend most of the trip diving the reefs of Komodo National Park, it was time to see the main attraction: KOMODO DRAGONS!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Beware ye who enters! The entrance to the dragon trail was ominously decorated with these skulls... from the dragon's past victims? Aaargh!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The landscape of the island where the dragons lurk is suitably prehistoric-looking. Kept expecting to see a tyrannosaur or brontosaurus stick its head above the palm trees.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Our first 'oh shit' moment came when our guide spotted this komodo dragon hanging out in the trees above us! Didn't feel so safe after that.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Once we got out from under the canopy of ambush trees for the dragon to pounce on us, we had to do the obligatory group photo. Drew has a bit of a 'Land of the Lost' look going with that fedora, ya?

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
We were told that komodo dragons kill by biting you with their filthy mouths, then they wait until you go into shock from blood poisoning before they eat you. I found out later that this wasn't entirely true, apparently scientists have recently discovered that komodo dragons also have a powerful venom in their bite which works a lot faster than septic shock. Our guide didn't have to tell us twice to keep our distance from this hungry looking bastard.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
This is precisely what you DO NOT want to see crawling toward you when you're in Komodo National Park!

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
I think my camera lens picked up some of the nasty bacteria from this bugger's breath when I was shooting this photo...

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
We smelled fried fish and Doritos... Hmmmm... Doritos.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The last thing you'd see before the inevitable dragon attack.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Falling into the dragon pit was definitely not how I wanted to end the trip to Komodo National Park.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Komodo dragons are the largest variety of monitor lizards. My friend Eddy in Bali once invited me for a 'chicken curry' dinner at his place near Kuta Beach. When I asked why the 'chicken' was so tough and stringy, he said 'oh yeah, this is a monitor lizard that ATE my chicken, so we made it into curry instead.'

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
Pretty sure those nasty, pointy claws could do a lot of damage if the septic saliva and poison didn't get you first.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
These animals seem like they would really like to eat you.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
A face only a mother could love.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
After the dragon adventures it was time to head back to port. On the way we passed this fisherman in a dugout canoe and handmade sail.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
The last of the gratuitous group photos. This time we convinced our amazing crew to join us at the bow of the boat.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
A sunset Bintang back in Labuan Bajo was a pretty ideal way to end the trip.

  • Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park

Liveaboard Scuba Dive Safari to Komodo National Park
You can see several of the other liveaboard dive boats in the Labuan Bajo harbor with the awesome Seven Seas roughly in the center--I'm hoping to someday do a trip with them.
